Is it only March? The Alabama vs Clemson game for the National Championship was only two months ago but it feels like a year. I can’t wait for the season to start even though we might not get to play in a bowl game we still get to see our Rebels go out on the field and play with an “Us against the world” mentality.
Also we get to see new players take the field with good players like Chad Kelly, Evan Engram, and Damore’ea Stringfellow leaving. Now the question for this football team is…who is going to step up? Who is going to be a key factor for Ole Miss this season? Here is a list of 5 players who I think needs to step it up so our Rebels can have another good season.
(This is not in any particular order.)
5. Marquis Haynes
Let’s start this list off with the big fella, shall we? Marquis Haynes is beast when it comes to dominating the other teams offensive line. Haynes had seven sacks last year, 53 tackles, and three forced fumbles last year. As a defensive captain on the team now Haynes will have to also set a good example for younger players on the team. If Haynes can have a successful 2017 campaign, I hope you guys are ready to see him on Sundays.
4. Greg Little
Offensive Linemen don’t really get the credit they deserves especially in college football. They are a key factor for quarterbacks and running backs to have success in this business. Even though Greg Little might not get the respect he deserves can leave a legacy like Michael Oher and Larmey Tunsil did here. Expect to see him as a permanent starter for the rest of his career here.
3. A.J Brown
I really enjoyed seeing A.J Brown in a Ole Miss uniform this year and he proved to us why he isn’t to be taken lightly on the football field. However, we need him to be more efficient on the field. He’s a good player. Now that his freshman year is over with I expect more this year. Brown had 29 catches for 412 yards but only 2 touchdowns on the year. I expect him to be dominate next season.
2. D.K. Metcalf
Luckily, our offense have a lot of good wide receivers. Even with the loss of some good players. D.K Metcalf is another threat teams need to watch out for. When you see a player of his caliber he reminds you a little of Laquon Treadwell. Remember the touchdown he had against Florida State? Unfortunately, Metcalf’s season was cut short after he suffered a broken foot and was ruled out indefinitely. The question is whether he has recovered fully from the injury? Only time will tell.
1. Shea Patterson
We kind of already knew he was going to be on this list, so I saved him for last. Shea Patterson is a force to be reckoned with in the SEC. Early in the season we was wondering if we should of redshirted Patterson. We redshirted him but all that took an unexpected turn when Chad Kelly suffered a Torn ACL and had to miss the rest of the season. That’s when Ole Miss pulled the redshirt off Patterson and it was time to see what he was made of.
In just 3 games this season he threw for 880 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. How will Shea turn out for Ole Miss? Some says he could be the next Johnny Manziel (without the drama) and some people says he’s just a bust (don’t worry mostly State fans).
Don’t just look at these five because Ole Miss has tons of talent. This is just the beginninng of something special for our program. But for now WAOM!-The Kid.
