Ole Miss Football: 2016 Football Season Review

Ok so, Ole Miss Football this year is a great example of the disappointment fans have felt. I think this one isn’t Hugh Freeze fault since we have been under a NCAA Investigation for some years now and doesn’t look like that it will go away soon. We started out the season getting pumped up for Florida State and we wanted to see how Chad Kelly will perform in this game. After having offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia, Ole Miss fans could not wait to see him play again.

In that game, we already saw our first major injury and it wasn’t even halftime yet! I can remember this play like it was yesterday. Florida State’s QB Deondre Francois threw a long ball to Kermit Whitfield (FSU WR) and Ken Webster tried to break it up but landed awkwardly on leg and it bent the wrong way. He was in so much pain as he had to be carted back into the locker room and Ole Miss fell apart from there. We lead up a 28 to 6 and ended up losing 45-34 after making careless mistakes with the ball.

Then we all saw an outstanding freshman D.K Metcalf injury his foot in the second game of the year against Wofford. He was also out for the season. Making it the third Rebel to already be out for the season since Week 2 (Webster, Eric Swinney). Injuries really effected this team.

We did see bright moments against teams like Georgia and Texas A&M but we couldn’t pull out important games like our rivalry games against Arkansas, Vanderbilt, LSU, and most important and the one that hurt us the most, Mississippi State. That lost hurts a lot because not only did we lose the Egg Bowl Trophy at home, but we also saw any chances of making it to a bowl game go down the drain.

What can we do to get better?

Well, I think it starts with a big rebuilding process and we’ve already started that by making huge changes to our staff. Seeing that we have a lot of new faces around the campus is what Ole Miss Football needs right now. We also have a Star QB in Shea Patterson and the best group of WRs in the SEC. I really hope that this NCAA Investigation comes ends as soon as it can so it can open us more recruiting wise. I believe one of the main reasons that we didn’t get 5 Star recruit Cam Akers out of Clinton, Mississippi this year is mostly because of this NCAA investigation.

Out of all I really think we need to improve our defense. That defense is going to revolve around Marquis Haynes. Haynes has decided to return for his senior year. However, we need to improve our pass rushing which was flat out awful last year. We need better linebacker play as well. If the defense gets better, we will be fine next year.
